cameras. at dulaney valley, volume picking up more on the west side. a nice ride coming in from the fort mchenry. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. >> we begin this morning with some breaking news out of north baltimore where a two-alarm fire sends a family of six running out into the night. >> jennifer franciotti has the update for us. >> good morning. this fire broke out after 2:00 a.m. this morning. inside this house behind the green fields nursery at the corner of northern parkway and falls road. working at the exxon station, across the corner, you say you saw the flames? >> yes. it was almost 2:25 a.m. i was inside working. when i saw the flame, i thought it was the moonlight, and then

after a while i was walking in and after a minute, when i looked out it was getting bigger and bigger. i thought it was fire then and trying to call 911. then i saw the fire trucks coming and said somebody called already. i was walking but the whole time it was getting bigger and bigger. one of the men from the firefighter told me it was like over 100 feets of fire. >> it was very big. >> yes. >> thank you so much for describing what you saw. we want to let you know what happened. apparently this started on the second floor. there were six people inside. four women, a grandfather and a 10-year-old boy. one of the women, a grandmother had to jump from an attic window. the other women had to jump and said they felt the flames

licking them, shooting out of the window touching their hair and arms. they had to jump to safety. right now fire investigators are trying to discover the cause of the fire. they had to pull, it was a very long hose pull, because they had to come up falls road and make this turn on west northern parkway. that hose has been rolled up. we've seen fire equipment leaving. so it's a good sign maybe this portion of falls road will open some time soon. jennifer franciotti, back to you. >> thank you. apparently shootings have left five people wounded. the first shooting took place around 8:30 at the intersection of pistol place and 10th at brooklyn. police found three people wounded. all three are listed in serious condition, but they are expected to survive. and then under two hours later,

more shots fired in east baltimore. this time police say the victimser were a man and woman. the man was hit in the side and the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh. homicide detech i was the are handling this case. >> a woman is accused of beating her aunt to death. d'lana simmons used an anti-autotheft device known as the club to beat as i israelya mitchell to death. she called police herself to report the attack and could not explain why she did it. police arrived found a simmons in the dining room with blood on her and mitchell lying in the living room. >> it appears the victim was struck repeatedly with the club device usually used to secure automobile steering wheels. >> police say they have no motive in this case. the bail review for simmons is set for later today. >> well, it's a make or break vote in the senate.

downtown. we're live at rogers farm the north run corn maze here in greenspring valley and it feels 49 or 50 here. it's chilly this morning. i'm with brook rogers. you have this open every fall. it's friday, saturday and sunday and $8 for adults and $6 for kids. what can they experience this year? there's a new theme. >> we have the t rex and people can take a map. also for younger children, a play area, mini maze, a tire play land and corn tepee, huge pumpkin patch. >> you can pick your own? >> yes. you can cut them off the vine with help from our helper and animals and a hay ride. >> i think we have video of the t rex head. what inspired the whole dinosaur theme? >> well, i have to be honest. i have two boys, so they were

birds in my ear. but we like to always do a different thing that's fun. >> i need a personal gps to find my way to the station so i can imagine what is like being in a corn maze. so a lot of fun and something to do with your children this fall. let's check h.d. doppler. things are nice. a great way to wrap up the summer months. but ironically it's going to feel hotter as we head into the first full day of fall. but showers to the west of the great lakes. a system will be flirting with us the next few days, but we will be feeling the heat a noticeible difference. >> tony have you ever been in a corn maze and lost? >> no, but that's huge. and you're really feeling the heat island effect from downtown to the suburbs. >> and i'm freezing. yes. i should have brought a jacket. i can't rely on what it feels

in the upper 70's and low 80's. so we're going to jump a good 30 degrees from morning to afternoon. sunrise at 6:53. overnight, mostly clear and cool. but not as cool as last night. temperatures will drop back to the 50's in the suburbs. 60's in the city. here's the summer stuff. the autumn equinox takes place tomorrow night at 11:09. ironically we have summer-like temperatures in the forecast. this the mid 80's through the end of the week. wednesday and thursday and friday scattered thunderstorms. then it will cool off over the weekend. could be rain early saturday but then temperatures drop back into the 70's. let's see if sarah is going to say the same about the traffic. >> we have a couple of problems out there. but nothing major. southbound 83 past york road a

dry conditions caused live ammunition to spark a fire. it forced the evacuation of about 1600 homes. prosecutors plan on charging the woman who threw acid on her own face and blamed the attack on someone else. ever -- after reportedly spending $1,500 on fundraisers on dinner, travel and clothing. and a makeshift runway became a -- a makeshift highway became a runway after a pilot radioed he was not able to make it to the airport. no injuries were reported. >> in this morning's "consumer alert" with three months until christmas the hot toy trends are coming in. google predict it is nerf and

stampede blaster will be the toy this season. google says searches for the toy have jumped 17%. for younger kids there's ma tell's thingamajigs. google was among the earliest to predict zoo zoo's craze after spotting searches earlier in the season. 11 news reporter jane king has more in your bloomberg business report. >> believe it or not there's word the recession has ended according to the national bureau of economic research which says the worst recession since the great depression actually ended in june of 2009. might not feel like it with the jobless rate so high and the housing market still trug struggling. but the declaration sent the s&p to a four-month high and investors will see what the fed says today.

as for local stocks, bloomberg index up almost 10% and things are food for maryland economy compared to other states. maryland ranks 15th in income growth this year, way better than last year when it ranked 27th on the list. at the new york stock exchange, i'm jane king for wbal-tv 11 news. >> in this morning's woman's doctor, obesity brings in all kinds of problems, but one thing it hasn't been connected to until now is memory problems. 9,000 women ages 65-79 found those overal weight were more likely to have memory problem. >> women who gain weight in the hips have worse memory than women who gain weight in the belly. we don't know why that is.

>> good morning, everybody. welcome back to 11 news today, i'm stan stovall. >> and i'm mindy basara. meteorologist neal estano -- meteorologist tony pann has the weather for us. >> it's going to warm up quickly this afternoon. we expect a lot of sunshine. the high temperatures to be in the upper 70's to low 80's. >> we are following a developing story out of north baltimore where a two-alarm fire sent six people fleing to safety. >> general -- jen, the good news is everyone got out safety? >> yes. and an amazing feat considering how quickly the fire spread. inside the house behind the green fields nursery, at the corner of northern parkway and falls road. according to one of the fire

victims, it happened inside a second-floor bedroom and took just points in spread. six people were inside at the time, four women, a grandfather and 10-year-old boy. the 57-year-old woman was forced to jump from the attic. she injured her leg and was taken to a hospital. two women climbed out to a second-floor roof awning. and one fire victim described what it was like to have to jump from the second floor. >> and i was so scared of the jumping aspect that it took me a minute. and i was on the phone with 911 as it's happening then i heard the boards starting to crack and crack and crack, so i had to jump. i just had to jump. >> and that was christine who also described hearing the windows shattering and could feel the roof was about to go. she talked about as she was making the decision to jump, the fire nipping at her hair

and burning her arm and was treated at the scene for burns but didn't want to go to the hospital. there were six animals two dogs, two cats, a chinchilla and bird and none survived. at this point that's the most heartbreaking part of all this. but all six people were able to get out alive. >> thank you, jen. >> one of six people charged with carrying out the murder for hire of a gas station owner has been convicted. the jury spent less than two hours finding the nephew guilty. porter was shot and killed back in march in what was supposed to look like a gas station robbery. coil and others were paid $9,000 to carry out the crime. >> in other courtroom news, a man accused of beating an hispanic man do death because

of his race. jeremy holly was -- told police he killed martin reyes because he hated mexicans. >> and the assistant coach for the baltimore ravens faces charges for driving under influence again. and you moehler was pulled of on the outer loop of the beltway for speeding. he's charged with seven motor vehicle violations for driving under the information. the first time he was stopped for d.u.i. back in may of this year. in this morning commit 2010 report a new poll in maryland's race for governor and brand-new attacked a. overall still a very tight race but political observers note bob ehrlich has the lead over martin o'malley among independent voters. following the governor's race,

this report was filed. >> this political tved a literally cuts martin o'malley and his -- to pieces. thed a follows a new poll by republican-leading reports calling the rematch a tossup. o'malley leads ehrlich 50%-47%. a statistical tie considering the margin of error. 45% consider the economy the main issue. out of that category o'malley holds a 56%-42% lead over ehrlich and 84% of republicans back ehrlich as do 27% of independent voters. political science professor says montgomery has the largest number of independent voters in the state. >> it adds up to a lot of votes. if he can get those votes for

himself and take them away from o'malley, it could change the election. i don't think that's likely to be the case in montgomery coun. because it's one of the deep blue, bluest couns in maryland. >> 79% of those surveys knows someone out of work or who are looking for work. many believe maryland's job market is getting worse. >> o'malley passed a 20% sales tax hike. >> a tved a pore trays o'malley as the political leader responsible for these hardships. >> martin o'malley. higher taxes, fewer jobs. moving maryland backwards. >> what each candidate needs to do is separate himself from the other in terms of policy.

>> good morning. sarah caldwell checking in on your morning commute. volume picking up creating delays, but nothing too significant yet. 41 miles per hour on southbound 95. starting to see a delay out of the northeast approaching the beltway. once you get beyond that, you're in good shape until you get much further south. prior to 70, developing slow spots on the west side outer loop. if you travel toward d.c. for work you will find delays developing due to an accident just into us there. at old court we are starting to see delays going away from us in the outer loop and in the area of 83 at which you juan road, moving well in this portion of the harrisburg expressway. now to sandra shaw. she's live, telling us how to

in the 80's the government allowed genetically-altered food and now we have food allergies. >> in a day and age where we are constantly concerned with cancers and the causes why would we consider altering fish? >> good morning. we're still getting reports of an accident on 95 southbound toward the capital beltway just prior to that. an accident reported. around powder middle road. and southbound 95 volume-related delays. backing up heavily around 795 toward liberty then southbound 795, a bit of a delay out of owings mills toward the beltway. if you are going to be traveling on the west side, that's your heaviest spot.

live with more. >> good morning. this all unfolded after 2:00 a.m. this morning in a house on west northern parkway. it's a little dot see but over my right shoulder the red cross is on the scene assisting firefighters. four women, a grandfather and 10-year-old boy were in the house and the grandmother was forced to jump from an attic window and was taken to a niche hospital for leg injuries. another victim said she and her girlfriend had to jump from a window on the second floor and told a dramatic story about being chased out of the window by flames and as they jumped they were being singed. the 10-year-old boy was able to make it out safely. to road is now open. reporting live, jennifer franciotti. >> thank you. coming up on oprah, she takes on the headlines with john
